Our #1 frequently asked question is the difference between a doula, nanny, babysitter or a baby nurse. Baby nurses may also be called night nannies or night nurses. Here's our two cents:
Repose Postpartum Doula
Formally trained in evidence-based postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care
Evidence-based newborn care and safe sleep practices
Education and guidance that builds parent confidence
Proactive communication and pattern awareness
Nanny / Baby Nurse / Babysitter
Often do not have formal credentials or trainings; Experience may vary
Primarily task-based infant care overnight
Follows instructions rather than offering guidance
Limited scope around recovery or feeding goals
May not have breastfeeding expertise to support lactation difficulties
Less emphasis on education or transition support
Families choose Repose for professional postpartum care and education that supports the entire family, not just childcare.

What does a doula do?
A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support to families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.
Where do you provide services?
We serve families throughout New Jersey and the NYC metro area, with both in-person and virtual support options available.

What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?
Midwives and nurses provide medical care. Doulas do not perform any clinical tasks. We focus on your comfort, education, and emotional wellbeing.
Are your doulas trained professionals?
Our doulas are professionally trained, many with certifications in birth, postpartum, lactation, trauma-informed support, and more. Some are registered nurses, changemakers within maternal health policy, therapists, counselors, midwifery students, herbalists, and more. We also provide continuing education and mentorship to ensure families receive high-quality, evidence-based care.
When should I book a doula?
We recommend booking as early as possible. Many families secure a doula in the second trimester. This ensures availability and allows you to build a strong relationship before birth.
Who will I be working with from your team?
First, you'll connect with either our founder, Lorraine, or our Client Relationship Specialist, Mijanou, who will learn about your family's needs and preferernces. From there, we'll introduce you to a doula (or team of doulas) best suited for your goals and personality.
How do you match clients with the right doula?
We take a personalized approach that considers your birth plans, family dynamics, personality fit, and any cultural or logistical preferences to ensure your doula feels like the perfect match.
What happens if my doula becomes unavailable at the time of birth or during my postpartum period?
One of the beauties of working with an agency is that every family always has a backup doula, and that backup doula has a backup doula too. In the rare event of illness or emergency, we will arrange for a back-up doula with a similar doula style to fill-in.
Do you work with LGBTQ+, single-parent, or non-traditional families?
Yes. We proudly serve all family structures and identities. Our agency is rooted in inclusivity, respect, and cultural competence.
Do you have doulas on your team who speak Spanish?
Yes, we do!
Do you accept insurance?
We are not in-network with any insurance companies. Many families use HSA/FSA funds or employer benefits to pay for their doula support, such as Carrot Maven, Cleo, and Progyny.
